About

You’ve found me – so thanks and welcome. I’m Taran Jordan, a writer who loves and champions freedom and self-reliance. You might know me as Lightning on several freedom-focused discussion forums, and I was for a time a Guest Editor at Strike the Root.

Besides being a writer, I’m a student of history and of self-sufficient living. My former blog The Gulcher’s Life, which is now incorporated into this site, deals with ways to create a lifestyle of cheerful independence.

I’m writing a historical novel, working title Liberty Train, a story of a very unusual young woman who decides to run an also unusual escape route – and has quite a few adventures along the way. If you notice me raving a bit more than seems reasonable, it’s probably because I’m having a rough novel-writing day. ;-)

The title of this blog, The Freedom Outlaw, was inspired by the writings of Claire Wolfe. Thanks, Claire, you alpha-maddog and Third Assistant Demigoddess of Freedom, you!

(And by the way, by no means do I wish to imply that I am “the” or “the only” Freedom Outlaw in existence. Quite the contrary – there are millions of us in the shadows. It’s just a concept that I chose for the blog’s title, with Claire’s permission.)

This site’s written contents are my own work, and therefore my personal and rightful property. Please do treat them as such. Contact me by email at taran (at) privaserv (dot) com.

Thanks,

Taran Jordan

Enjoyed the selections at STR today. They really hit home. ;)

Taran, who of us can know that Greenspan ever renounced the teachings of Rand. Atlas Shrugged offered as theory ONE method to bring down the state, but perhaps Greenspan found another way. If the impending economic collapse should be as damaging as some predict, we will all be forced to face reality and the result of our choices.
Perhaps the maestro should be praised?
    Just a thought.

    Taran,

Still enjoying your work at Strike the Root, I’m glad you decided to stick with it. I couldn’t find an e-mail address, so I thought I’d invite you here to invite the LeftLibertarian2 Yahoo list:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LeftLibertarian2/

    I think you’d be a valuable contributor.

I like the new look of your blog by the way.

Max – thanks for your comment, and FYI, I’ve provided a more in-depth response here.

David – Thank you for the kind words and the invite! The feedback I’ve received from STR readers (minimal as it’s been ;) – I think because even most libertarian-anarchists don’t like the idea of being even a bit uncomfortable) has always been thought-provoking and very welcome, and your thoughts are no exception. I’ll be checking out the Yahoo! group shortly.

Sorry to inform you, though, that I’ve just ended my ten-month stint as a guest editor at Strike the Root last Friday (3/16/07). Too much else going on, and there were other reasons for my decision as well. So I’m doubly glad to have the Yahoo! group as a possible connection channel to other freedom-livers.

Thank you again for being a fellow traveler. Cheers, Taran :)

How you doing? *Just thought I would drop a quick note, to let you know of a new site you might be interested in taking a look at, and maybe adding to your links page. Peace.

I just found your blog. I am reading all the info. I can about “gulching”. I am also trying to find “The Gulcher’s Guide” by Claire Wolfe. Can you tell me where I might find it? I’ve looked all the “normal” places online, but haven’t seen it.

    Thanks!!!

I’m going to have so many questions, etc. in the future…..
